Magandang Umaga:The ABS-CBN Tradition
There is no real record of a morning show (as we Noypis now it today) from Bolinao Corp/Bolinao Broadcasting/ABS-CBN or any Filipino broadcasting firm except for morning editions of the news programs.
The earliest known broadcast of a morning show was actually from ABS-CBN. As it returned full-blast to Philippine TV in 1986, ABS-CBN premiered its first ever morning show Magandang Umaga. Later to be renamed Magandang Umaga Po, the show had Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez among its hosts.
Outside Manila, ABS-CBN's regional stations launched regional morning editions of TV Patrol. Eventually, morning shows among the regions began to premiere. There's Good Morning Cebu, launched by ABS-CBN Cebu in 1990. There's The Morning Show-Bacolod, launched by ABS-CBN Bacolod in 1993, now on its 18th year. There is Maayong Buntag Mindanao (Good Morning Mindanao), launched by ABS-CBN Davao in 1994, now on its 17th year.
There were other morning shows in the 1990's broadcast from Manila but were in English, not in Filipino.
As it celebrated 50 years in Philippine media and communications in June 1996, ABS-CBN broadcast the first morning show (the first of the morning shows as we know today), making it the pioneer. Hello to Alas Singko Y Medya, originally hosted by Julius Babao, Gilbert Remulla and Panjee Gonzales. Because of the popularity and novelty of ASYM, other Manila-based Tagalog morning shows began to sprout.
It was when Tintin Bersola (of TV Patrol and Sineskwela fame) took over Panjee that the love story between her and Julius blossomed. (Julius and Tintin first met as they shared anchor duties for TV Patrol.) Julius and Tintin left ASYM in 2001 to host Talk TV, but Julius returned in 2002 as main host to the reformatted ASYM, this time called Magandang Umaga Bayan, then Tintin followed in 2003. The Julius-Tintin partnership seemed to be one of the reasons the viewers watched the ABS-CBN morning show series.
More than that, viewers got themselves glued to the latest news, information, public service and entertainment as the ABS-CBN morning show series deliver in a better way.
By 2005, Magandang Umaga Bayan then gave way to Magandang Umaga Pilipinas. It was in 2005 too also that saw the change in the face of morning shows in the regions. Good Morning Cebu soon gave way to Maayong Buntag Cebu/Maayong Buntag Kapamilya. Livelier editions of The Morning Show-Bacolod and Maayong Buntag Mindanao were seen. Cotabato TV Patrol
Since 1996, Cotabato TV Patrol, the 1st and only newscast in Northern Cotabato, Central Mindanao and Muslim Mindanao, has been taken the lead in covering the events in one of the least safest regions in the Philippines.
Cotabato City floods, the controversial Ampatuan Massacre, fragile peace-and-order situations in Central Mindanao, political upheavals in Muslim Mindanao, Christian and Muslim Cotabato festivals, success stories in Metro Cotabato--these are the stories featured in newscast. Part of the newscast were Queenie Casimiro, Annie Salon-Gacayan and Ferdinandh Cabrera.

In 1996 ABS-CBN launched the 1st (and now longest running) local newscast in Socsksargen (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Saranggani and General Santos City/Gensan). Now Gensan TV Patrol has been the lead in covering the news across the Southern Cotabato region. Examples of stories covered by the newscast were the rise of Gensan and Southern Cotabato, the communities of Gensan natives who became international Filipino stars like Manny Pacquiao, the flooding at South Cotabato's volcano slopes, and political landscape of Southern Cotabato. Among the anchors-reporters who covered them were Marivic Abrasada, Maja Moralde, former national TV Patroller Aladin Bacolodan and current ABS-CBN Manila reporter Dexter Ganibe.

The 1st and longest running local newscast in Dagupan City and Northcentral Luzon was launched 2 decades ago by ABS-CBN. Yes it is Dagupan TV Patrol. It has been at the forefront of covering news stories that matter to every person in Northcentral Luzon--among them commemorations of the 1991 North Luzon earthquake, the annual Pista'y Dayat, the pains and joys of development of Dagupan and Northcentral Luzon cities, the 2009 North Luzon storms and more. Now on its 5th year, Pampanga TV Patrol, the Philippines' 1st ever all-Capampangan local newscast is continuing its duty to serve the ordinary Pampango and the rest of Central Luzon.
For 5 years Pampanga TV Patrol has been covering events like the administration of 1st time priest-turned-governor Ed Panlilio, the struggle against jueteng and organized crime, the entry of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as Pampanga congresswoman from President, and the series of Capampangan fiestas, religious commemorations and cultural celebrations. Going strong for its 3rd year Batangas TV Patrol (Batangas News Patrol before, TV Patrol Southern Tagalog now) has been doing its best to serve everyone in Southern Luzon from Rizal to Batangas and Marinduque, and Mindoro to Quezon and Romblon.
The 1st ever local newscast in Batangas City, Batangas province and CALABARIZON had been featuring news among them the extensive rebuilding of Calabarzon and Mimaropa from typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng and the Calabarzon-Mimaropa fiestas. Please Help Out PHL (and Even Australia, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia & Brazil)!
I am listening now to Star ng Pasko. Why you may ask of all songs Star ng Pasko?
I decided to celebrate Christmas Dec 25 onwards that is till Feb 2. My mother's folk back at Tanjay City and in parts of Negros and even in parts of the country celebrate Christmas till Feb 2. Even cities and towns in Mexico and worldwide celebrate Christmas till Feb 2. And did I forgot to say this? The Armenian Apostolic Church--a kind of Orthodox Christian Church in Armenia--will have their Christmas Day this January 19! You may even take the option of celebrating Christmas by September this year (with the rest of PHL) or as early as July (like people in Ireland, New Zealand, Australia & even Antarctica do) or August (like those in the States, especially at Yellowstone).
Also, I like the song even more than this year's ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID. Keyword:heartfelt.
Seriously speaking, this song is composed after Typhoon Ondoy, Pepeng and other storms hit PHL in the last few months of 2009 (smack into starting the Christmas season in PHL). And what a way to listen to this song than today. Besides being the feast of the Christ Child (Sto Nino in Manila, Aklan, Cebu, CDOC, nationwide), this song is so significant until now.
What a way to celebrate Christmas and welcome New Year 2011! It was the 1st time for me to celebrate the Christmas season under the rain! Sadly it is the 1st time there was such nationwide devastation due to torrential rains-the first in a Christmas season!
Calabarzon region was hard hit with such torrential rains. Reports of drowned people came from Bicol Region, Central Visayas, Southern Mindanao, Northern Mindanao and ARMM. There was one electrocuted and dozens of families displaced in Western Visayas. Parts of Western Mindanao were still submerged. A considerable number of people were killed in Eastern Visayas because of landslides. Missing people were reported as cities and capital towns of Caraga flooded days into the New Year. And I hope you were not under the rock when you got news of scores of children and even grownups in Baguio City and the rest of Cordillera rushed to hospitals due to severe chills. [Even in those places farmers lamented of frost destroying all their valuable crops and even flowers timely for St. Valentine's Day.]
And PHL is not the only one. Australia, Sri Lanka, Brazil and even Saudi Arabia had their share of Ondoy-like tragedies. Already 600 people were killed in the floods in Brazil. Sri Lanka Australia, especially the state of Queensland and the city of Brisbane, has just begun the painful part of starting over. And would you believe a Arabian desert city like Jeddah just got flooded over the weekend?
Do you remember this song? "WELL, TONIGHT, THANK GOD IT'S THEM INSTEAD OF YOU..." Now that's ironic-sadly ironic...
I agree with Ariel Rivera singing, "Sana araw-araw ay Pasko..." A challenge is being offered to us--that we may bring the Christmas spirit not only on Dec 25 but every day of the year. You may not agree with me on how Christmas is to be celebrated but you may agree with me that we bring Christmas joy and don that Christmas spirit every single day of the year. That means "for life"! It's high time we must act now. Kaya po natin bumangon mula sa trahedya ng Ondoy at Pepeng. Kaya pa rin natin ngayon!
