On the Old Shows of Channel 2 Long Ago
A question was once posed on a Facebook group which was composed of loyal viewers of ABS-CBN's Channel 2: If you were to make a set of old shows of Channel 2 that you consider your favorites, what are they? The catch: name only 10 shows on the list. Of course, being an ABS-CBN viewer since a kid, the shows this blogger liked were too many to mention. Now he is all grown-up, and got some insights with my study of general education (yes, this blogger got training to be an educator) and of the Catholic faith, he felt he is now more discriminating with this set of shows he really missed. He hopes that these will be re-aired in other ABS-CBN digital channels (like Yey for kiddie programming and Jeepney TV for non-kids fare).
Let's list them here according to genre.
Philippine drama
OK, the blogger is hands-down about Mara Clara, Esperanza, Mula Sa Puso/From the Heart and Pangako Sa Iyo/The Promise (both the 2000 and 2015 editions) and even Ang Probinsyano/Brother From the Province and Wildflower--they are hard-core dramas; there's no question about that. He considers them honorable mentions. He just realized this year a detox of the heavy dramas watched every night for the past 2 decades is what he really needed. After all, too much heavy TV dramas make viewership unhealthy.
Top choices for me are the classic light dramas like Be Careful With My Heart with Jodi Santamaria and Richard Yap, and We Will Survive with Melai Cantiveros and Marietta "Pokwang" Subong. And do not count out faith-based dramas such as May Bukas Pa with Zaijan Jaranilla--such shows are what PH TV Primetime needed.
Philippine comedy
Sure, there is Home Sweetie Home continuing the tradition of family-oriented PH sitcoms on ABS-CBN. But nothing beats the old-time favorites such as Home Along Da Riles with PH's great Comedy King Dolphy and Arriba Arriba then headlined by Jolina Magdangal. Also, before the likes of Banana Sundae and Goin' Bulilit, there were Goin' Bananas and Super Laff-In (the pre-1972 edition and the 1996 edition).
Philippine talk
There is Magandang Buhay on weekday daytime. But this blogger has missed big-time gabfests like Talk TV, and Morning Girls: Kris and Korina. (Wait. Did I mention these were helmed by newscasters?)
Philippine variety
For a lack of a homegrown TV game show on Channel 2, the writer proposes bringing back the beloved Game Ka Na Ba.
Philippine TV news
Nothing beats TV Patrol, Bandila and The World Tonight (now on ANC). This blogger though has missed the action-packed ABS-CBN Headlines mainly anchored by Tony Velasquez and Karen Davila and a gamut of ABS-CBN journalists.
Philippine TV current affairs
Yes, there is Mukha (on ANC) and the DocuCentral specials on Channel 2 (and on ANC too). There is something about the earlier editions of Magandang Gabi Bayan with Noli de Castro along with The Correspondents with Karen Davila and Probe with Cheche Lazaro--both on Channel 2--that this blogger wonders if broadcast excellence the ABS-CBN way can be showcased again to the world.
Public service
Hurray for My Puhunan, SOCO, Mission Possible and Red Alert! But nothing beats the original Kapamilya public service show Hoy Gising (then headlined by Ted Failon, Korina Sanchez and Kris Aquino).
Educational
Ah, all classic ABS-CBN Foundation shows (Bayani, Sineskwela, MathTinik) the writer really missed! Then again, besides Yey and Knowledge Channel, when will Channel 2 have more of these shows in daytime?
Teen showcase shows
Ah, this blogger means the comedy-variety shows Ang TV and Kaybol, and the infotainment show Cyberkada. That is amidst the fact that the tradition continues with the segments in ASAP and the broadcasts of the regional editions of "MagTV Na". Cyberkada all the more brings the empowered ABS-CBN young artists to the fore of the network's mission "In the Service of the Filipino". Only time will tell if a show akin to Cyberkada and Ang TV will be launched soon.
Australian live-action series
Only one Kapamilya show stood out: Bananas in Pyjamas. Who can ever forget B1 and B2 plus the 3 bears Morgan, Lulu and Amy and Doding Daga (Rat-In-A-Hat)? That is one classic Australian show on Channel 2
Japanese live action shows
Now these shows are the first shows this blogger watched when he was a kid. Because of these shows, he eventually became a young Kapamilya viewer For live action (tokusatsu in Japanese), nothing can replace in this blogger's heart the series like Bioman (the last Super Sentai/Super Squadron series on PH TV dubbed in English), Maskman (the first Super Squadron series on PH TV dubbed in Filipino though it moved from its original PH TV network Channel 13 to Channel 2) and Shaider (the first Metal Hero series dubbed in Filipino).
Japanese animation shows
Also, part of his childhood has become his viewing of My Patrasche (animated TV adaptation of the novel "Dog of Flanders") and the World Masterpiece Theater programmes (Princess Sarah/adaptation of A Little Princess, Cedie/adaptation of Little Lord Flauntleroy). This blogger noted that gone were the days when TV adaptations of child-oriented literary classics abound. As for the teen-oriented anime like Tenchi Muyo and Akazukin Chacha, yes, the blogger misses them. (Not all teen-oriented anime had violence and sensual themes, just a few of them.)
Chinese drama comedies
Well, the legendary Chinese TV show for Kapamilyas happened to be Meteor Garden. Then again, the show Girls Marching On charmed this blogger more. A Chinese drama-comedy is indeed possible. Cheers for more Chinese drama comedies!
British animation series
With the UK as a favorite country aside PH, one show stood out: the animated version of the Mister Bean series. And the blogger really liked it more than the live-action original, which also was aired on Channel 2 (after a few years on Channel 5).
Spanish American shows
Surely, Rosalinda and Maria Mercedes are iconic shows from Spanish America, but this blogger would have them rated as honorable mention. For him, nothing beats the child-lead telenovelas
Chabelita (Televisa-Mexico's Gotita de Amor), Nino Felipin (Televisa-Mexico's El Nino Que Vino del Mar) and Frijolito (Telemundo's Amarte Asà Frijolito). These three shows have cute leads and child-friendly and values-laden story lines (with no need of adult-oriented language, violence, sexual, horror, drug-related themes).
American sitcoms
American sitcoms like The Nanny and Mad About You--these are what were missed more from Channel 2. After all, a good laugh is what the blogger need after years of watching depressing drama series on primetime. He misses more of such shows on Channel 23 as Studio 23 (then considered the home of such American sitcoms).
American animation shows
There was Lilo and Stitch on Channel 2 (finally, after decades of Disney cartoons on rival channels), There were the Warner Brothers cartoons (Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes--personal childhood comedy favorites, also shown on Channel 2), all Nickelodeon Junior cartoons--and he liked them really.

Why Salubong Sa Bagong Taon on ABS-CBN?
You may be just like me who can still remember the epic 25.5 hour New Year special to welcome Y2K/Millennium 2000 on Channel 2 which included a dusk-to-dawn New Year variety show boasting of high caliber performances from most ABS-CBN artists. You may wonder why this New Year variety show was not repeated in New Year 2001/New Millennium/Millennium 2001 thereafter. You may wonder why the ABS-CBN News anchors and reporters took most of the work to present the New Year countdown year after year (which they did even for New Year 2000).
First off: New Year's Eve and New Year's Day events (year-end gatherings, year-end presentations, incidents occurring before and after due to overindulgence in the celebrations, 1st New Year baby, firecracker injuries, even peace and order situations and emergency alerts) most of the time are news-worthy. Don't worry: the ABS-CBN News reporters are there.
Second: Christmas break is true for most musicians, singers, dancers, actors, performers and presenters--an opportunity to spend the Christmas season for real off-stage, off-cam, off-mike. This is also true for reporters, but the call of duty for public service and journalism is stronger even during the holidays. We must be so lucky spending Christmas break with our loved ones, while others spend the holidays on duty to serve us on radio and TV.
Third: ABS-CBN marks the New Year in a simple way. Having a New Year presentation (midnight coverage and broadcast Mass) is better than none at all. Having a big New Year concert is another story--another drain on the finances with regards to costs of planning, organizing, promoting and executing, including the talent fees.
If you can remember what happened in 1999-2000, there was just little word on Channel 2's Christmas special (which is actually an annual tradition on ABS-CBN). All eyes were on the network's Millennium 2000 coverage. You can imagine the stress of mounting 2 specials during the year-end--for both Christmas and New Year. Well, after Millennium 2000, the network personnel have little to worry about every year-end.
Then again, New Year countdowns on TV are the exciting part of the year-end, especially with the news anchors and reporters in their lightest and best selves :) That is why this blogger anticipate every Salubong Sa Bagong Taon coverage at year-end; this year won't be different.

On Channel 2's Remakes of Shows from Other Channels
Word is out that ABS-CBN's Channel 2 will air the 2018 remake of the Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden. Back in 2003, Channel 2 aired the original Taiwanese drama (produced and aired first on CTS Taiwan back in 2001) with fantastic viewership levels in time for ABS-CBN Television's 50th anniversary. Airing the Mainland Chinese remake of the Taiwanese drama (set to premiere in Greater China next year) seems logical for Channel 2--no problems of producing its own remake of that widely popular show, focus on producing all-original Filipino dramas.
In response, GMA's Channel 7 bagged the rights to produce the 2018 Filipino remake of the Korean drama Boys Over Flowers (originally produced and aired by KBS Korea in 2009, then telecast in PH by Channel 2 on the same year).
Truth to tell, Meteor Garden and Boys Over Flowers trace their roots in the Japanese comics series Hana Yori Dango. HYD was printed in the Margaret Magazine in Japan from 1992 to 2003 and in Shonen Jump Magazine in 2005. It had an adaptation in animation in Japan itself produced by Toei and aired by Asahi Network (the home of Bioman, Maskman and Shaider which were all aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2). It was adapted also on film in Japan and Taiwan. It had adaptations in TV: yes, Taiwan's Meteor Garden and Korea's Boys Over Flowers, plus Japan's Hana Yori Dango, aired on TBS in 2005 and telecast in PH via Channel 7 in 2009. (TBS is the home of the Ultraman Series, aired on ABS-CBN's Channel 2 and other channels in the 1990s and 2000's.)
Well, Channel 2 happened to be first one to remake drama shows (local or foreign). A number of people said that ABS-CBN think-tanks seemed to like a few stories in the dramas featured on the other channels, so making a remake of that show for them is a good risk to take. After all they have more all-original local stories to weave for the drama shows the channel is making, and making a remake of a show originally seen in PH in another channel that is so good is worth taking the risk.
Here are the list of shows from ABS-CBN's rivals which were took on by the network.
Gulong ng Palad: This was originally aired as a radio drama in the late 1940s over MBC-DZRH. MBC was one of the premiere AM radio stations in PH after World War 2, and its chief rival happened to be ABS-CBN (then named Bolinao Corporation) with its radio station DZBC (later named DZAQ). In the 1970's, it got a TV adaptation via government-owned Channel 9 (a channel formerly owned by ABS-CBN) featuring lead actors Marianne dela Riva and Ronald Corveau. In 2006 (60 years after the founding of ABS-CBN as Bolinao Corporation), the network's Channel 2 aired its take of the radio drama featuring lead actors Kristine Hermosa and TJ Trinidad.
I Love Betty La Fea: Featuring lead actor Ana Maria Orozco, it was originally aired by RCN Colombia in 1999. It aired in PH during lunchtime on Channel 7 in late 2001 as the channel's answer to the ever popular Alicia (originally El Amor No Es Como Lo Pintan of Mexico's Azteca Network), only to face off later with Eco Moda (its sequel aired on Channel 2, also from RCN Colombia). Channel 7 personnel got the surprise from ABS-CBN's airing of its take of the Colombian drama in 2008 in collaboration with RCN. It featured lead actor Bea Alonzo.
Maria la del Barrio: Featuring performer Thalia as its lead actor, it was originally aired in Televisa Network in Mexico in 1995. It aired in PH a year in Channel 9 replacing Marimar and re-aired in 2003 in Channel 7. In 2011, ABS-CBN worked with Televisa for its take on the drama featuring Erich Gonzales as the lead.
There are accounts on Maria Flordeluna and Annaliza though. Ray Benedicto brought both the shows which were actually Cebu radio shows to Manila. Maria Flordeluna was an ABS-CBN Cebu radio drama. (There might be a possibility that Annaliza was also an ABS-CBN Cebu radio drama, which is to be verified further by the blogger.) The radio shows got TV adaptations in Manila in the late 1970s/early 1980s: Maria Flordeluna aired in Channel 9 featuring lead actor Janice de Belen, while Annaliza aired in Channel 7 featuring lead actor Julie Vega.
Ultimately, both shows were remade by Channel 2: Maria Flordeluna aired in 2007 with lead actor Eliza Pineda, while Annaliza aired in 2013 (as part of the 60th anniversary of Philippine TV and ABS-CBN TV, the media firm that started it) with lead actor Andrea Brillantes.
And to cap off the entry, let then be told that there are Channel 2 shows which were remade by the rivals.
Shaider: This show, along with Bioman (and later on Maskman) served as Magandang Gabi Bayan's pre-programming hour every Saturday on Channel 2, before giving way for an earlier 90-minute run of MGB in the early 1990's. It found Channels 13 and 7 as new homes in the late 1990s and early 2000's. In 2007, Channel 7 aired the action-drama Zaido, the channel's take on Shaider. Mixed results on the airing of Zaido, various accounts said, made ABS-CBN think twice on remaking Japanese tokusatsu shows, especially Maskman. (The ABS-CBN take on Maskman never materialized.)

Channel 7 personnel got the surprise from ABS-CBN's airing of its take of the Colombian drama in 2008 in collaboration with RCN. It featured lead actor Bea Alonzo.
Maria la del Barrio: Featuring performer Thalia as its lead actor, it was originally aired in Televisa Network in Mexico in 1995. It aired in PH a year in Channel 9 replacing Marimar and re-aired in 2003 in Channel 7. In 2011, ABS-CBN worked with Televisa for its take on the drama featuring Erich Gonzales as the lead.
There are accounts on Maria Flordeluna and Annaliza though. Ray Benedicto brought both the shows which were actually Cebu radio shows to Manila. Maria Flordeluna was an ABS-CBN Cebu radio drama. (There might be a possibility that Annaliza was also an ABS-CBN Cebu radio drama, which is to be verified further by the blogger.) The radio shows got TV adaptations in Manila in the late 1970s/early 1980s: Maria Flordeluna aired in Channel 9 featuring lead actor Janice de Belen, while Annaliza aired in Channel 7 featuring lead actor Julie Vega.
Ultimately, both shows were remade by Channel 2: Maria Flordeluna aired in 2007 with lead actor Eliza Pineda, while Annaliza aired in 2013 (as part of the 60th anniversary of Philippine TV and ABS-CBN TV, the media firm that started it) with lead actor Andrea Brillantes.
And to cap off the entry, let then be told that there are Channel 2 shows which were remade by the rivals.
Shaider: This show, along with Bioman (and later on Maskman) served as Magandang Gabi Bayan's pre-programming hour every Saturday on Channel 2, before giving way for an earlier 90-minute run of MGB in the early 1990's. It found Channels 13 and 7 as new homes in the late 1990s and early 2000's. In 2007, Channel 7 aired the action-drama Zaido, the channel's take on Shaider. Mixed results on the airing of Zaido, various accounts said, made ABS-CBN think twice on remaking Japanese tokusatsu shows, especially Maskman. (The ABS-CBN take on Maskman never materialized.)
Rosalinda: Featuring performer Thalia as its lead, it was originally aired on Televisa Network in Mexico in 1999. (It was actually a Mexican take of 1972 Venezuelan drama Maria Teresa aired on Venevision.) It premiered in PH via ABS-CBN in the year 2000 much to the delight of the viewers. The ABS-CBN airing of the show ultimately became the most-watched drama series in PH TV history as per AGB-NMR. That was the reason why Channel 7 re-aired the show and did a remake in 2009 featuring Carla Abellana as the remake's lead.
